Beautiful Things Are Still Happening - SOL20 Day 21

Today, I did something that I never thought I would do.

Back in October, one of my good friends asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding. I wasn't surprised when she asked me. She told me years ago (before she met her soulmate) that she would ask me to be in her wedding someday. This was going to be my first time ever being a bridesmaid, and I had no idea what to expect.

I got to do all the fun, traditional bridesmaid things: order an ill-shaped dress that I'll never wear again, order too-high glittery heels that I'll never wear again, help plan activities for the wedding shower, give advice on decor, buy a million gifts, etc.

Instead of having a bachelorette party, my friend decided that she wanted to do a weekend trip with all the girls. Since I live out of state from the rest of them, she asked me to host the weekend here in Indianapolis. We had a jam-packed schedule of things to do. I had a blast picking out the best places to go.

The week before the bachelorette weekend, my school closed. A couple of days later, it was issued that people should not gather in groups of more than 50. A couple of days later, restaurants and bars went to carry-out only.

That being said, the weekend was cancelled. We were all crushed. We were all worried for my friend. Earlier this week we got the text:
"We're rescheduling the ceremony and reception"

It was the text that we had all been dreading. I cried for my friend.

Yesterday, I received another text from her:
"Cole and I decided to change the date. We're going to get married tomorrow! We are gathering our witnesses and we're going to do it in the Pastor's office. Do you want me to FaceTime you?"

Um, YES!

Today, I did something that I never thought I would do. I "stood" as a bridesmaid in my friend's wedding from my couch, 2.5 hours away. My roommate passed me the tissue box as they said their vows. I muted myself to hide my sniffles when they said, "I do".

The thought kept playing over in my mind, "Beautiful things are still happening. There is still joy."

Someday, I will get to wear that ill-shaped dress and those too-high glittery heels to their reception. For today, the call was more than enough.

  1. How sweet! These really are unprecedented times which call for unusual solutions to the challenges before us. A marriage is always a happy occasion. I am glad you got to experience it virtually.

    1. Yes, unprecedented for sure. This was one of 3 weddings that happened this week (though this was the only one I was able to watch virtually).

  4. That is amazing!!! I love how intimate this was, and that her friends still felt special - I'm very happy for her and her husband; they have a memory for their anniversary :) What a wonderful way to solve the problem in the unique circumstances
